What the number is, and why it sets your freight bill
This is EIA's average retail price for on-highway No. 2 diesel across the U.S., taxes included, surveyed at stations every Monday and published Monday evening (Tuesday after a federal holiday).
Most truckload, LTL, intermodal and parcel fuel surcharges are indexed to this weekly figure. A common truckload table adds about a cent a mile for every 6 cents diesel moves, because it assumes a truck gets 6 miles a gallon. By that rule, this week's 18.3¢ drop takes roughly 3¢ a mile off a typical surcharge. Check the peg and step size in your own contracts: a table pegged at $1.20 a gallon charges surcharge on everything above that, which today is most of the pump price.
